Majestic karsts launching out of the water created thousands of years ago, create the backdrop for our next adventure. The kids and I board the Paloma boat with 18 other nationalities and ages, alas Marvin is laid up in Hanoi fighting off a bacterial skin infection (due to a mosquito bite) with IV antibiotics from the hospital every 24 hours for the next three days, his black outline on his leg shows where the infection and swelling reached to.
We sail out to Bai Tu Long Bay whilst enjoying our 5 course lunch onboard. Time for exercise so we get on a tender to a small islet and climb the 90 steps to Sung Sot Cave, the returning to the boat we cruise to the Hang Trong islets where we drop anchor and go for a kayak around this area, then time to cool down by jumping off the boat into the refreshing water for a swim.
Time for pre-drink cocktails before another 5 course meal for dinner. Then the kids and I tried squid fishing, no luck but had a real interesting chat with the local squid helper whilst waiting for the squid to bite, his story like many of the other guides we have got close to during our trip displays what a different life and set of opportunities they have then ourselves in the western world. In the western world, opportunities in life are often self-made and everyone is on an open footing. Whilst in Vietnam your scope can be limited from the day you are born, because tradition is so important your opportunities are further reduced if you do not have a clean slate from the past three generations of your family, and lastly these people do not view travel of the world as a right, it is an absolute priviledge limited to just a very small part of their 90 million population, most never leave within a limited distance of their place of birth.
We finish off with a quiet drink on deck enjoying the peacefulness of the bay.
Day two starts of with a Tai Chi session on deck at 6.15am, before heading off to the Vung Vieng floating village on a bamboo sampan, then seeing a Pearl farm to learn how natural pearls are created.
Time for our final luncheon before we head back into Halong Bay to meet out driver and head back to Marvin in Hanoi.
