We're going back to school today not Oakura school though, we're going to a rural school about 1 hour from Luang Prabang. On Thursday we wake up nice and early because at seven we have to walk to the local library. When we arrive we wait a bit till the tuk tuk comes.
When we arrive at the school all the kids look out their classroom and look at us, we walk up closer and then take some pictures of the kids. The school was in a village up towards the mountains and it was way different to Oakura school. It didn't have any electricity, no windows, no grass only gravel and only had 80 kids in the WHOLE school up to year 5.
We slowly walked into a random classroom and said "sabaidee". We started trying to teach them head, shoulder, knee, toe song since they didn't know any English, only the basics. It was a bit hard at the start but after a while they could say the words correctly.
Now it was time for play time. There was: soccer, volleyball, hula-hoops, and lots of games using balls, hula hoops, and more. I had lots of fun running and playing around.
About 30 minutes later all the kids sat down since it was story telling time, of course no one in our family knew lao language so we had to look at the pictures. As well as reading a story the leaders talked about hygiene and how to keep clean
.
Just when we were about to leave we gave everyone in the school: 1 toothbrush 1 toothpaste 1 soap 1 pen and a notebook and left a selection of sports gear & paper to make paper planes.. We said "kop chai" then went and hopped back in the tuk
What I learnt about even though their school might be poor, they are all still happy about what they've got. Some of the kids haven't even gone to the actual city Luang Prabang, some of the kids don't even want to go there.
Today we had such a fun day I think when we drive back to the library.
MEANINGS FOR WORDS:
: sabaidee = hello
: kop chai = thank you
: tuk tuk = taxi, but open more
: Laos = the countrys name
: Luang Prabang = the city we're staying in
Sounds like a great day Katie. What a lovely idea to leave some useful things for the kids there.
